Chapter Twenty-One

~

A s much as Justin wanted to go through the new notebook that Loosey had given him, he focused on Geography. Justin’s strategy for the course had been to finish the book, not knowing where the class stopped. There wasn’t enough time to finish everything.

He studied more deeply toward the end of the book and showed up at nine o’clock in the morning, relieved that the rest of the class had arrived for the final.

Justin’s strategy had paid off since the professor had jumped to the last chapter when Justin was absent. He was comfortable with his answers and exited the lecture hall along with two others who had finished as early as he did.

When Justin came out, he spotted Farah on a bench reading a chess strategy book. “I haven’t seen you since last week,” she said. “I’m finished, just like you. I thought I’d be sitting here longer. Is anything new?” She shut her book. “Please speak.”

“Where are you going to live?” Justin asked.

Farah brightened up a little. “Willow asked if I wanted to move in with her, but there’s no place for Lottie.”

“I can give you a big enough raise so you can move to a place of your own with Lottie.”

Farah pursed her lips and knit her brow. “We’ve been over this. I don’t want to be a kept woman.”

“I’m helping my friend. You could move to Roseguard. We have rooms with servant’s quarters. Lottie could live with you there.”

“Would you mind? I couldn’t work at the office if I did that.”

“But you could catalog all the books at Roseguard. That would be a specific task and Lottie would help. I’m working on which day I’m going to leave. If you have to be out before then, Lottie and you could stay at the office for a few days,” Justin said.

“We have to be out by the middle of next week. Would you mind?”

“Willow runs the office. Shall we talk to her now?”

“Maybe we could eat lunch together.”

“Then let’s get a carriage, and if Willow isn’t at the office, we can still eat out.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

The carriage dropped them off in front of the office, and Willow was in her office working on someone else’s legal work.

“Caught me!” Willow said, turning red.

Justin shrugged. “I let Darwin study when he didn’t have anything to do or anywhere to go.”

“Maybe you should have kept him busy,” Willow said.

“That was obvious, but I don’t think that would have solved Darwin’s issue. Teddy Billwater was the issue,” Justin said. “Lunch on me.”

Willow raised her eyebrows. “I don’t see anything.”

Justin smiled and shook his head. “I will buy lunch if you accompany us.”

Willow put a paper in the book she was using and slammed the book shut. “Let’s go.”

“Farah chooses. She finished her finals today, just like me,” Justin said.

“You are free to go to Roseguard?” Willow asked.

“I have a few more sessions with my magic theoretician. His name is Loosey, and he is Zach’s former uncle.”

“Tell us while we eat,” Willow said.
